spalled concrete ceiling repair

Sometimes when structural concrete is poured the reinforcing bar falls out of place during the pour and sets close to the bottom. With not enough concrete surrounding it to hold its higher expansion pressure, the concrete spalls breaking out pieces of the ceiling below as in the case of this repair. We came in and demolished the concrete and stucco back until we found a good surrounding bond. The structural steel was ground with a wire wheel to remove any loose rust. It was then treated with Por-15 to stop and prevent any future rusting. The concrete itself was washed with a damp sponge to remove any dust and two coats of bonding agent was applied. Hydraulic cement was used to build out the cavity and stucco to the surrounding ceiling profile. Stucco texture was applied and then painted with two coats of the communities matching exterior paint.
